Changing Money

Uganda's currency, the best ways to exchange money, and tips on budgeting for your safari.

Currency & Banking

Understanding the local economy will make your trip much smoother.

Local Currency

The official currency is the Uganda Shilling (UGX). While US Dollars are widely accepted at major lodges and for park fees, you will need Shillings for local markets, tips, and small purchases.

Using US Dollars

Crucial Tip: Ensure your USD bills are printed after 2013. Older notes are often rejected by banks and businesses in East Africa. Notes should be clean and crisp.

ATMs & Credit Cards

  • ATMs are available in major towns (Kampala, Entebbe, Jinja, Fort Portal).
  • Visa is more widely accepted than Mastercard.
  • Credit cards are accepted at luxury lodges but usually incur a 3-5% surcharge.
